FORKLIFT OPERATOR/MATERIAL HANDLER

Summary

This is an hourly-rated position that performs at the American Bridge Company Storehouse, and manufacturing facility, any combination of duties described in detail below. Unlike a typical forklift operator position at a warehouse or distribution facility this job requires a wide variety of tasks as the workflow to support ABC’s heavy civil construction projects dictates.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Run heavy equipment (including, but not limited to: forklifts, telehandlers, overhead cranes or other handling equipment) to safely move, load, and unload trucks and trailers.

· Experience with at least one of the above-mentioned types of handling equipment is required. Experience with multiple types is preferred. Willingness to learn is preferred.

· Material handling (inside) - readying materials within the fabrication shop for shipping.

· Material handling (outside) – readying equipment and other stored materials for shipping.

· Work as part of a crew and take direction from supervisors. Primary job functions do not rely on exercising independent judgement.

· Performs various types of yard organization and cleanup activities on a routine basis.

· Performs other duties as directed by management.

· Conducts pre-shift safety inspection of equipment.

· Ensures proper maintenance of equipment.

· Has knowledge of commonly used practices and procedures used in industrial/construction/fabrication environments.

· Ability to use a variety of hand tools is preferred. Including but not limited to: banding tools, drills, grinders, hammers, pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers, tape measures, etc.

· Must be safety-oriented and exhibit safe work habits.

Other Skills and Abilities

· Must be able to legally work in the United States.

· Must be willing to work in a drug-free environment and agree to a post offer drug test.

· Must be willing to work safely and keep OSHA recordable incidents to a minimum.

· The candidate must have excellent diagnostic skills and a willingness to continue to improve technical knowledge and ability.

· The ability to communicate well and get along with others is an important attribute for the success of this position.

· This candidate must possess a professional attitude, as well as the willingness to work the necessary hours to meet all customer needs.

Physical Demands

Constant physical effort, including standing, is required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day, Monday through Friday. Employee must be able to stand for extended periods of time, and to stoop, bend, and crouch as required to perform Essential Duties.

· Frequently work with hands extended overhead, sometimes in conjunction with the operation of hand power tools.

· Ability to lift and carry, on a frequent basis, at least 50-90 pounds personally, and up to 150 pounds with assistance.

· Manual dexterity to hand-carry generators, lumber and other construction materials, power tools, and hand tools.

· Indoor and outdoor work in all types of weather

· Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.

Work Environment

· Work is performed outdoors and indoors in all weather conditions.

· Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.

· Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.

· Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the yard, including the activities of other employees, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.

· Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on construction sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel and ready mixed concrete.
