The Yard Operator is an hourly-rated skilled position that performs in the American Bridge Company Storehouse Yard any combination of the duties described more fully, below. A Yard Operator typically performs a wide variety of tasks, transferring from one task to another as the workflow dictates.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Experience with Heavy Equipment Operation, including Cranes, Forklifts, Telehandlers, Boom Lifts, etc.
  • Understand and perform the functions of equipment operation including:
    • Truck loading and unloading
    • Material lifting and placing within the yard
    • Inspection, monitoring, and maintenance of heavy equipment to ensure optimal operation
    • Identify and address any problems or defects
  • Work with Laborers to load and unload trucks, move material around the yard etc.
  • Secure yard and equipment at the end of each shift to protect the public and material
  • Follow all policies and procedures with strict attention to company standards

  • Must be able to legally work in the United States.
  • Must be willing to work in a drug-free environment and agree to a post offer drug test.
  • Must be willing to work safely and keep OSHA recordable incidents to a minimum.
  • The candidate must have excellent diagnostic skills and a willingness to continue to improve technical knowledge and ability.
  • The ability to communicate well and get along with others is an important attribute for the success of this position.
  • This candidate must possess a professional attitude, as well as the willingness to work the necessary hours to meet all customer needs.

Education and/or Experience     

A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred.  Must be able to understand work directions and communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees. Two (2) to Five (5) years or more of industry related experience is required for this position.

Mathematical Skills        

Ability to work with crane charts and perform related calculations.  Individual should have some level of business acumen, including knowledge of operating expenses, profit, etc. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

Basic computer skills are needed to operate the computers that are on cranes.

Physical Demands

  • Constant physical effort, including standing, is required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day, Monday through Friday. Employee must be able to stand for extended periods of time, and to stoop, bend, and crouch as required to perform Essential Duties.
  • Indoor and outdoor work in all types of weather
  • Ability to lift and carry, on a frequent basis, at least 50-90 pounds personally, and up to 150 pounds with assistance.
  • Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed outdoors and indoors in all weather conditions.
  • Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.
  • Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the yard, including the activities of other employees, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.
  • Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on construction sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, and diesel fuel.
